It seems that more than quite a few OnStar customers are going to lose their service shortly. Why is this? Ask the FCC. The FCC has agreed to sunset the analog cellular network by January 1st, 2008. Granted, many other countries around the world have already gone to a digital only network, and this is usually good news unless you're an OnStar subscriber with an older vehicle equipped with the analog network only system.
The OnStar system was originally built by Verizon Wireless back in 1996 on an analog network based solely on the fact that digital network coverage wasn't what it is today. As such, the early systems were analog only and not dual-band capable. This will affect more than just certain GM vehicles to 2002 (and some from 2002-2004) but even some home security companies who rely on a "cell phone" back-up in the event that a phone line is cut.But all is not lost, GM has set up a website with plenty of information so subscribers can check if their vehicle can be upgraded to weather the switch.
