It's rare....it's got quite a history...and thanks to Mecum's Monterey auction, it has a new home.
The L71/L89-powered '67 Corvette Sting Ray coupe (one of only 16 '67s built with the L89 aluminum heads option), ordered new by a neighbor and friend of then-GM VP and Chevrolet Division General Manager Ed Cole, sold for $205,000 when it crossed the block at Mecum’s first-ever Monterey auction at the Hyatt Regency Resort in Monterey, California on August 15. The price was the highest among over two dozen Corvettes that went up for bids at Mecum’s auction, and was the auction's fourth-highest selling price. (A race-only coupe built by some snake wrangler/chili-maker from Texas was the auction's top seller, at $7.25 million--Scott.)This ultra-rare Midyear--also optioned with F41, A82, N89 and other items that pushed its sticker price to around $6,500--was joined in the Mecum Monterey auction's Top Ten by an L88-powered (and one-of-116 built)'69 Stingray, whose hammer price was $150,000. (To see how the other Vettes--and the array of exotics, sports cars, classics and cruisers that went up for bids--did, visit www.mecum.com and click on "Results.")The Mecum Auction Company has been specializing in the sale of collector cars, muscle cars and Corvettes for more than 20 years. Their next event is the Bob McDorman auction of rare neon signs, vintage parts and other automobilia--with PLENTY of Corvette-related items--to be held at McDorman's Canal Winchester, Ohio Chevrolet dealership on September 11-12.
